OCR: Reptiles have dry scaly skin and are better able to conserve water. As these animals are cold blooded, they need the sun's warmth to heat up their bodies to make them active, and hot desert conditions can be advantageous to some groups of reptiles. Reptiles can often go for long periods without food, and this is another advantage in an environment where food can be scarce. However, even the hardiest desert species often have to escape from the heat of the summer midday sun.
